Looking for inspiration for his spring collection, Alexander Wang had to search no further than, well, his feet. Sneakers on the runway! But here, Wang reimagined them as clothes. The known sneakerhead directly translated some of his favorite sneakers onto the clothing and accessories of the collection. But back to those sneakers: Wang said he takes no stock in trend reports he’s seen saying there’s a backlash against the sneaker.

The show was a solid Wang performance. The line offered what one wants out of a sneaker: some fashion, flashy function and a baseline of comfort. First came an homage to the typographic bar codes — in the form of oversize belts as well as nondescript collar markings — that he featured in his resort line. Then came the hypersaturated mini-dresses in neon coral, lime, and blue that have a neoprene wetsuit feel, and still others in sheer black that illicit more of a spacesuit vibe. Then there were the statement-making accessories, which included both colour-block textural heels and mesh sandals. And then came the sportswear that has always set Wang apart: High heels were inspired by the Nike Air Woven, dresses, top and handbags were inspired by the Air Jordan sneaker range, New Balance and the Adidas Stan Smith.

This collection might be very well of his Spring 2015 collection as a “greatest hits” anthology since the Parsons dropout started his eponymous line in 2007. This time he reconnects again his early days when girls first started falling in love with his streetwise downtown cool. In the end we need to underline what Nicole Phelps said that today the new Wang was the old Wang, only with a lot more artisanal details. (Text Teuku Ajie)
