Maison Martin Margiela’s faceless masked were at it again at the label’s Fall 2013 Haute Couture show. It looks like the Margiela’s mask is on its way toward becoming one of the more iconic looks in modern high fashion. This time around plucked with flowers, dripping with paint, and encased in crystals, the face coverings complemented the creations while adding drama to the collection’s more subtle offerings (an astute statement from platform boots with crystal spikes and cuffed boyfriend jeans sans blue).

Fabrics were the big eye catcher at this season’s Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal. From denim and satin, to ornate original 19th-century embroidered material. Fall 2013 included both clean-lined cuffed trousers and outerwear, and more avant garde draped tops and dresses. The most notable looks featured fabric flowers appliquéd at the hem or at the waist. The Asian theme is seen again on two of the closing looks – long, wrapped jackets with silky embroidery and a kimono cut. This artisanal take on reconstruction is a far cry from the origins of the garments. On the Margiela runway, they are literally transformed into some of the most prized and pricey clothing in the world. (Text Teuku Ajie)
