For the season collection Fall/Winter 2014, Prabal Gulung transported the women of the Mustang kingdom in the Himalayan territory that was said to be off-limits to foreigners until 1991. It was due to his last trip back home that Gulung had been inspired by this wedged kingdom to take it to the catwalks of New York Fashion Week. The sense of tribalism and urban chic transformed his conventional red-carpet garments into feminine astrakhan-influenced outerwear in layering and drapery that took a spotlight on traditional village attire as weel as Buddhist monks. The fur layering was an essential golden key for Gulung to capture the essence of the kingdom’s mother nature.

Gulung’s outerwear creations involved dramatic coats paired with knit sweaters, sarong skirts and the heavy-knitted cable sweaters. Fur vests, collarless pieces fusing suede and sliced leather and even a Mongolian lamb collar knee-length coat were also Gulung’s heavier Mustang-an outerwear. Yet amongst those, the sartorial look was revealed when pieced with draped chiffon skirts, which give a feminine touch via the exposure of bare thighs. There was unconventionality in the fabrics Gulung chose such as the tapestry-inspired satin into shirtdresses and tweed and embroidered organza into an asymmetrical evening top, which made it a topnotch A* checklist in the fashion’s spotlight. The color palette runs along a crystal winter whites to the autumnal mix of burgundy, marmalade, orange and scarlet red.

Gulung climaxed his collection on the finale with model Joan Smalls walking down in a Swarovski-crystaled embellished gown appearing with a sensual dominating high slit in midnight black. But alongside the outerwear, Gulung’s famous red carpet dresses was not forgotten as they will be a show-stopping fiesta in the upcoming Oscars Awards and Cannes Film Festival! (Text Nadilla Sari Ratman)
