Rise: Lara Jensen – The Modernist Millinery

If you think of millinery, something that pop’s in mind will be names like Stephen Jones, Rachel, Trevor-Morgan, and many more. But, Lara Jensen is definitely a ones to watch as millinery designer that has been collaborating with the biggest names such as Karl Lagerfeld and Lady Gaga. Usually, millinery design will look very pretty and proper as the use of it is to cover someone head, which at the end it become one symbols of status of authority. Also, to wear a hats its such an adornment and could turn people appearance much more attractive. However, Lara Jensen on the other hand has been interpreting millinery into another different experience to its customer. After completing her Master degree in Costume Design for performance at London College of Fashion, Jensen went assisting milliner Charlie Le Mindu as the first assistant. Since then, she started making her own hats production. Her pieces were very stands out as the look of it very different and structural. Lara herself loves to create a very fantasy look pieces and also likes to combine mish-mash of textures and techniques, feathers, leathers, metals.  For her previous Autumn/ Winter collection 2012, she was playing around with massive crystals from ambers to bright red and pink. She turns these beautiful crystals into dangling masks that covers our face and gives a feeling of Marie Antoinette in this modern era. Dare to be different, definitely a must wear pieces for costume party.  This spring, Jensen explored more in the idea of death, funerals, and the collection called ‘Vanitas’ which she explains it’s a vanity of vanities. Old relics and symbolism inspired her, she focuses more on gold, patent leather and feathers that create the feel of funerary yet still emphasize the beauty of it. The highlights of this season were the stackable gold rings and the rose pieces worn as mask and headpieces. Truly her collection was very grotesque yet striking for a pose. (Text Dinta Jakile)
