Revolution! The flawless decision by Marc Jacobs to appoint British designers Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley as the new reigns of the sister brand to Marc Jacobs was a wise one for a brand that was built by Jacobs under the nuances of Brit fashion from the 60’s. And to make a debut appearance this fall, “girl power” is the key ingredient. There was some hidden androgynous power to it all but the inspiration was nothing but Japanese sportswear screaming Power Rangers. Transforming a pier near the Financial District to a modernized skate park, complete with ramps and hills, the MBMJ’s ladies walked down unleashing their inner BMX warrior with the new vamped brand’s designs. As one of the designers Bartley said, “we’re going back to her roots and making her tougher” as they all know, MBMJ has always been an energetic yet a feisty and brooding woman. 

The pieces were truly a bold statement-maker. There were boyfriend jeans with flashy patchworks, bandanas covering halfway and dresses that read “Revolution” and Bunny Hop” with bold-colored graphics designed by Fergus Purcell of London’s Palace Skateboard. Rebelliously masculine looks consist of sharp-shouldered blazers and draping trousers into knee-length socks or the feminine take would be blouses embellished in giant bows and pleated skirts. But the most dominating of all were the ninja-esque military inspired pieces that were accessorized with sleek pigtails as if ready to march on as volunteers. Embellished tops and wide pants, tartan prints and monochromatic outerwear were “the looks”, and not to forget the obi belts to give it that Japanese bold hunch. Layering was the essence to embody these statement pieces together and to finish it all off, structured cross-body and plasticized bags were held.

With these two British design experts, it looks like MBMBJ will be making it back to the top list – of course, as a diffused sister brand to Marc Jacobs still. This debut received an outstanding approval by Marc Jacobs as well as the rest of the fashion audience. It’s only a matter of time until MBMJ will get its groove back! (Text Nadilla Sari Ratman)
